About Us

Aikido of Rockford is affiliated with Capital Aikikai, which is led by Clyde Takeguchi (Shihan, 7th Dan). Our Sensei, Justin Ramza, is a Sandan (third degree black belt) who has also studied other styles of Aikido, Aiki-Jujutsu, and Shotokan Karate.

We consider ourselves to be more of a "club" than a "dojo," so we're a more laid back group. Our attire is informal. Since we're throwing each other around and rolling all over the floor, looser clothing, however, is a must. If you don't have a gi, you are welcome to wear sweats.

We offer several classes throughout the week.
  • Saturday: 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
  • Sunday: 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
  • Wednesday: 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Our monthly fee is $40, or $100 for 3 months.  These dues cover the club's costs (heat, water in spring/summer/fall, electricity, federation dues, insurance, travel to seminars); they do not cover instruction; instruction is free. We do not work on a "contract" basis (like many dojos). People should be free to participate as much as they can and to the extent to which they are inclined; there are no obligations.

Visitors are always welcome.  Prospective students are encouraged to view Aikido videos (search: Aikido Takeguchi ) to get an idea of what aikido is like.  Please do keep in mind - many of the practitioners you will see have been studying aikido for many years.  One learns aikido the way they learn any other skill in life - one step at a time.

If you have questions, there are a couple ways to get in touch with us. We have an Aikido of Rockford FaceBook page. If you have your own FaceBook page, you can PM the page administrator through it. Alternatively, if you would like to talk directly with our Sensei, you can reach Dr. Ramza, by phone at 815-988-9885, or write him at aikidorocks@gmail.com
